Ophthalmic Complications of Periorbital and Facial Aesthetic Procedures: A Literature Review

The emergence and popularity of cosmetic facial procedures may lead to significant ophthalmic complications such as ocular motility dysfunction visual disability. Here, we present a scoping review identify common in some plastic surgeries injections, develop clinical approaches for prophylaxis management terms direct attention awareness non-ophthalmologists toward scenarios appropriate intervention. This was conducted according the Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. following keywords were used search PubMed, Scopus, Web Science, Google Scholar: “facial laser”, fillers”, injections”, “hyaluronic acid”, “local injections botulinum toxin”, “rhinoplasty”, “blepharoplasty blindness”, “ophthalmoplegia”, “diplopia”, “ptosis”, “ophthalmic artery occlusion”, “posterior ciliary “ocular ischemic syndrome”. A total 37 articles published between 1989 2021 included, which 21 case reports. most complication vision loss (0.0008%). risk including pain, sudden unilateral or bilateral loss, flashes light, ptosis, ophthalmoplegia increase with injection anatomical regions like glabella, nose, supraorbital nasolabial folds. incidence adverse events ranges from 5% 18% rhinoplasty. after blepharoplasty dry eye syndrome diplopia, caused by eyelid ptosis. Eyelid, cornea, lens, retina injuries are that occur laser treatment. Ophthalmic non-ophthalmic becoming increasingly common. cumulative reported cases hyaluronic acid filler 2016 2020 showed different types events, being decreased acuity, varying outcomes each ranging partial resolution complete recovery. These must be recognized early, prompt treatment established.
